Summary/Abstract: Architect PenchoKoichev (1876 – 1957) was an influential creator in the field of architecture and town planning. He has created remarkable works – mainly public buildings, which still perform their functions to this day and, in parallel, are unique aesthetic topoi in the centers of more than 10 Bulgarian cities. He has also made analytical contributions to the field of visual arts and to the study of traditional folk culture. This article presents a littleknown manuscript by architect PenchoKoichev, created in 1952 – the monograph on monumental monuments from the Russian-Turkish war of 1877/78. The manuscript has 170 pages and is fully preserved in the personal file of the architect in the Central State Archives in Sofia. It includes descriptions of 344 memorials, memorial sites and museum sites related to the said war. A historical overview is also available, in which the development of military operations is depicted. The book was not published by the decision of the then Ministry of Culture. Although more than 70 years have passed since its termination, it is valuable for the punctual information and for the attempt to comprehensively survey a segment of the nation’s cultural memory embedded in memorial monuments and historic sites.
