Summary/Abstract: The space is not simply an inert physical setting in which the individual lives out his existence. It is more than that. "It inhabits us as much as we inhabit it", hosts, challenges, participates. There are no unitary dimensions applicable to all spaces, the identity profile of each place determining its limits. In this article we will try to determine the profile of the space that authorizes the passage, the temporary installation, the temporary halt. We will therefore talk about the room in which the love story between Emma, the central character of the novel Madame Bovary, and Léon takes place. We will only insist on the characters to the extent that the space enhances their experiences, disinhibits and modifies their behaviors. We are interested in the confined space related to the room in the Hôtel de Boulogne, which will become subject to analysis from a double perspective, that of the heterotopic space and that of the "functional, standardized and dehumanized" space called "non-place" by the specialized literature.
