Summary/Abstract: Reputed philologist, linguist and ethnologist of the late 19th century Romania, Lazăr Șăineanu left us several important masterpieces among many volumes and studies. Nowadays his name, still mentioned sometimes, is not given the place it deserves in the history of the study of the Romanian language or folklore. His “Universal Dictionary of the Romanian Language”, together with the “History of the Romanian Language”, both published at the end of the 19th century in Bucharest, are proof of the interest Romanian scholars took in the knowledge of Romania’s history and language at the turn of the century. Their attempt was not only scientific, academic but part of the construction of a unitary identity of all historical provinces of Romania. An erudite with an encyclopedic and organized mind, Șăineanu left us books of great value and scope. This article’s intention is to pay tribute to the influence of his works in the history of Romanian philology and detail to some extent his academic assumptions, theories, and conclusions.
