Summary/Abstract: Consumption patterns are a product of economic, social, political, and cultural environment; they are influenced by geographic localization, historical development, traditions, values, and esthetic tastes. Through consumption patterns, certain social inequalities are reproduced, and different forms of authority are strengthened. Due to its specific connection and interdependence with concepts such as labor, production, status, life styles, values, and culture, the concept of consumption patterns is part of the terminology of sociology of labor and economic sociology, class and stratification theories, urban sociology, sociology of culture, sociology of consumption, economics, psychology, marketing studies, anthropology, political sciences, etc. The significance of the new interdisciplinary approaches to the study of consumption patterns seems to arise almost fortuitously in the course of the particular histories of particular disciplines. Moreover, in many cases the topic of consumption patterns seems to present a fundamental challenge to the basic premises that so far sustained each discipline. This might make us rethink our conception of consumption patterns and our approaches to their study; it also indicates the need for rethinking areas within already acknowledged boundaries of disciplines.
