Summary/Abstract: The review examines the monograph "Rīgas dendijs un autsaiders. Kārlis Padegs" by art historian Jānis Kalnačs (Rīga, 2011). Kārils Padegs (1911-1940) is known first of all as a virtuoso of ink drawing technique, portraying the outcasts of society, like disabled soldiers and prostitutes, in a vivid manner with expressionist and verist overtones. Largely forgotten in the Soviet period, the name of Kārlis Padegs has become almost canonical in the present, embodying the romantic paradigm of the unrecognized genius haunted by poverty, illness and lack of public understanding. The book is an unprecedented documentation of his manifold output that includes also oil paintings, cartoons, book design, etc.
