Summary/Abstract: The article raises the question about path of the relics of St. John of Rila in 1469 in its final part from Sredets (Sofia) to the Rila Monastery. This part is unclear and not described by Vladislav the Grammarian in his story about the transfer of the relics of St. John of Rila to the Rila Mountain. An analysis of the anthroponym “John” (“Ivan”) and its use in songs of Bulgarian heroic epic is made. The specificity of the geographical distribution of the songs shows that the transition of the relics significantly fostered the use of the anthroponyms and caused increasing frequency of certain songs motifs associated with the event. The geographical distribution of the songs reveals that the relics of the saint passed from Sredets (Sofia) to Rila Mountain through a region, the centre which is the western part of Samokov Valley.
