Summary/Abstract: During the last decade some controversial signals come from the zone of the Adriatic Sea. In 2007 even the European Council called on an Adriatic Sea coastal state (Croatia) to refrain from implementing its maritime Zone based on the Exclusive Economic Zone provisions, which contain some among fundamental rights and duties of a coastal state under the Law of the Sea Convention. The article looks at some key features of the Adriatic Sea as a region and makes a review of developments leading to recently adopted legislation. It examines the positions on maritime jurisdiction by Adriatic Sea states Croatia, Slovenia and Italy as well as the new developments assessed from relevant policy perspectives like EU membership.
