The Historical Development of Health Insurance in Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: The ignorance of individual economic phenomena development in a sufficiently representative time horizon very often reflects on their subsequent practical application. When this condition is associated with phenomena of general public importance, the noncompliance with historically established patterns can lead to deformations in the process of its subsequent enforcement. The health insurance in Bulgaria has undergone a long and fraught with contradictions period of validation. Essential features tracing the development of the health insurance between 1878 and 1998 are presented in a systematic form in the article The main purpose of this article is to trace the emergence and penetration of the health insurance in Bulgaria. It corresponds with the author’s desire to introduce separate chronological elements that may affect the current situation, adapted in the context of the supporting changes in European health systems.
