Summary/Abstract: Among the many talented artists from the period of the Revival Zahari Zograf was the most daring in- novator who, basing himself on the iconographic tradition, introduced in his numerous paintings of icons and murals decisive innovations. For the introduction of the secular portrait in Bulgarian art, the main merits should go to Zahari Zograf. The easel portraits created by him presented us with a new type of artist who aimed to create a new type of painted images – a picture. Realizing the importance and role of the individual in the reviving Bulgarian society he was the first to dare to introduce in the strictly established practice of keeping firmly to the canons his own image on church walls. Discarding the anonymity of the mediaeval artist he marked next to his image not only his name and profession but also his nationality – Bulgarian. Last but not least Zahari Zograf expressed himself also as a so- cial figure – a fighter for church independence and enlightener, a fighting for the creation of Bulgarian schools, books and publishing houses
