Summary/Abstract: The article presents the undertaken in 2010 conservation and restoration activities in the chapel Assumption of St John of Rila in the Rila Monastery. They are the first stage of an overall general study and restoration of the murals in the main monastery church Nativity of the virgin. From the research it became clear that the murals in the chapel were made mainly with the traditional egg tempera on dry plaster and in the case of many images there was gilding and oil paint was also used. The greatest damages of the painted layer were caused by the con- densation of moisture. The whole surface of the murals was covered with soot, dust and other debris. This combination of problems complicated the process of cleaning and stabilizing of the murals. During the work in the chapel in the drum of the cupola an inscription was discovered showing the year of inscribing and the personal names of the icon painters. In this way categorically was confirmed the thesis they were the work of Dimitar Hristov Zograf and Kostadin Petrovic valiov from Samokov. This has taken place in the summer of 1840 and as we know the chapel was sanctified that same year.
