Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the new developments in International Law after the end of the Cold War period. It was considered that the end of the ideological division of the world would create favorable conditions for the growing role of International Law. It is to regret that these expectations were not realized. The lack of success of the International community to prevent inter-ethnical or inter-religious conflicts in different countries, on different continents (especially in Iraq) lead to speculations re the "marginal" role of the UN. It lead also to speculations on the irrelevance of the international law when problems of international politics have to be decided. The article criticizes the theory of the collision between civilizations and its application in contemporary international law. The author argues that the division of contemporary International Law advocated by a number of International Lawyers) into two autonomous parts: one for the international jurisdictions and one for the relations between states is counterproductive. International law should respect the differences between traditions and cultures, but yet it should be applied in homogenous way.
