Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the development of the French historiography in the 20th century. Emphasizing the context of interdisciplinarity, the analysis goes back to the heritage of the 19th century „history school of method“. The Annales school, born in 1929 in Strasbourg, claims for renovation of history on the basis of its dialogue with other social sciences. Looking forward to improving its methodology and enlarging the focus of its research, the spirit of interdisciplinarity includes sociology, economics, statistics, demography, psychology, ethnology and anthropology. This work examines the experiences of three generations of the Annales school, but also the formation of new political and cultural history, as well as history of international relations in France. Putting their achievements together, one can underline the crucial benefits of an interdisciplinary approach.
