Summary/Abstract: The emphasis is put on regional trade agreements (RTAs according to WTO defi nition) between the EU and the countries in Southern and Eastern Asia. According to the Global Europe Strategy, bilateral trade agreements are one of the most important sources of growth in the EU. The recent economic development in Asia gives incentives to start bilateral talks. Two different agreements with this region are already in force – comprehensive free trade agreement with South Korea and Economic Partnership Agreement with Fiji and Papua-New Guinea. The next ambitious negotiations are pending, including such important partners for the EU as Japan, India and ASEAN countries. The impasse in multilateral trade negotiations (Doha Round) boosts development of RTAs, so the EU is forced to continue its ambitious bilateral trade agenda with the Asian countries in order to retain competitiveness in the world economy.
