Summary/Abstract: By using newly declassified documents from the most relevant world archives, particularly the Chinese ones, as well as relevant international literature, this article deals with the history of China’s relations with different Asian and African countries and their regional organizations during the first two decades of the Cold War. In essence, this is a general treatment of the emergence, development, and failure of Beijing’s Third World entanglements, particularly focusing on the issue of the rise and fall of the so-called Afro-Asian Movement that developed between the 1955 Bandung Conference and the unsucces-sful conference in Algeria a decade later. The ideological and political background of Chinese domestic issues, as well as Mao Zedong’s world perceptions, are also meticulously analized as the overall setting against which China’s Afro-Asian policy evolved. Without the proper understanding of China’s major role in Third World issues, one cannot fully grasp the importance of certain developments among Asian and African nations during the Cold War period.
