Summary/Abstract: The economy of Stara Zagora and its district from the Liberation (1878) to the end of World War I was pre-determined by the all-round political and economic development of the country. The area was agricultural and emerged as one of the principal producers of wheat and grapes. It gradually turned into a raw material base of the developing local industry. The food and beverage industry prospered . flour mills, production of alcoholic drinks, cigarettes and vegetable oil. The beginnings were laid of the chemical, metal-working and leather industries. The original accumulation of capital in commerce ended. A crediting system of local jointstock companies, banks and branches of central banks was formed. With the opening of the Stara Zagora railway station (1900) as part of the Nova Zagora-Chirpan-Plovdiv line the transport connections with the other parts of the country improved.
