Summary/Abstract: The annual Sommerakademie [‘Summer Academy’] was held for the twentieth time in Vienna between the 7th and 9th of July 2010. This time, the organizer, the Institut für jüdische Geschichte Österreichs [Institute for Jewish History in Austria] (St. Pölten) under the supervision of Eveline Brugger and Birgit Wiedl, focused on the attractive topic of Jewish finance in the Middle Ages. The lectures were divided into three thematic areas: the first examined the spiritual dimension of financial operations (i.e., money-lending at interest) and the Church’s attitude to it, the second considered the role of secular rulers and authorities, and the third looked at the practice of lending money at interest (usury) and the way it was seen by the wider Christian society. In view of the composition of the group of lecturers, the expositions focused on the Austrian, (south-)German and Swiss contexts, although the ideas put forward certainly have a wider application.
