Summary/Abstract: The study presents a comprehensive picture of anthropological ideas in Bulgaria during „the long 20th century”. In the fi rst part, covering the fi rst half of the century, the focus is on proposals regarding the new Man as formulated by various participants in the anthropological debate in our country at that time: the overman as defi ned by the Bulgarian Nietzscheans, the saint of Christian anthropologists, Man as an ensemble of social relations defi ned by Marxist thought, Man – a bundle of drives according to the psychoanalytical alternative, etc. The discussion also shows how a number of images of secondary importance of Man appeared in Bulgaria in the period between the two world wars, which serve as additional strokes in this overall philosophical portrait. The account continues by outlining philosophical-anthropological themes in the period from the late 1940s till the early 1990s, a time when the academic discipline „philosophical anthropology” was considered unnecessary. Finally, the present day great variety of philosophical-anthropological studies is commented on.
