Summary/Abstract: During the past few years we have witnessed important developments in the European Union Fundamental Rights Policy. There are also developments made possible by the entering into force of the Lisbon Treaty on December 1, 2009. Since that date the Charter of Fundamental Rights became legally binding. Besides, the EU made very serious efforts to allow its accession to the European Convention on Human Rights. In the light of these new developments it is important to remind of the first efforts to include the human rights problematic in the first communities’ treaties and the vivid discussion taking place in mid 20th century. Today these efforts are totally forgotten. The article discusses the stages of the evolution of the community law on human rights.
