Summary/Abstract: Folklore collection „Coastal Legends“, compiled by Dalia Kiseliūnaitė and published in 2010, was reviewed by L. Klimka. According to the reviewer, the folklore collection “Coastal Legends” consists of the material which was either published in various folklore collections or only documented at the end of the 20th century, but not published. Its conception is as follows: though the selected texts belong to the same geographical region, they belong to different genres and are recorded in different languages. The characteristic feature of these folklore works is the overlap of various cultural, ethnic and linguistic features, and this aspect could be treated as the major ethno-cultural value of the region. The old, most often translated, items are attractively supplemented by new records which affirm the vitally of coastal region traditions and its importance in the collective consciousness of the population. Part of this material, especially the one presented in the ancient and almost extinct language of the Kurshes, is unique. The collection “Coastal Legends” will be of extensive use both to the researchers of ethno-cultural heritage and to the representation of the region’s culture.
