Summary/Abstract: Rudolf Leo Weinert, the first custodian of the established in 1937 Museum in Sieradz, was born in Wieliczka. He went to school in Wieliczka and graduated a seminary in Cracow in 1911. In 1909, he married Eugenia Bierońska. He spent World War I as a non-commissioned officer on the eastern front, from where in 1919 he arrived with his wife to Sieradz, where they both became teachers. They worked as teachers practically until the end of their lives. Weinert was socially and politically active: he was a member of the Polish Socialist Party (1919 – 1924) and probably of the Society “Development” (“Rozwój”), a councillor in Sieradz, and a cofounder of the Musical Society in Sieradz. During the occupation, he joined the National and Socialistic German Labour Party. As a teacher, he was interested in history, especially archaeology. Since 1932, he cooperated with three Cracovian archaeologists: Tadeusz Reyman, Gabriel Leńczyk and Jan Fitzke, with whom in 1932 he investigated many archaeological sites on the borderland between Sieradz and Wieluń districts. In 1937, together with other wise inhabitants of Sieradz, he established the Museum in Sieradz and became its first custodian. Significant part of the collection of the museum was his collection of archaeological artifacts. Since the outbreak of World War II Rudolf Weinert, as Reichsdeutsch, continued his museum passions, collecting and protecting monuments of Sieradz and the area. He worked officially as Kreigsarchivpfleger. The protection of the collection of the museum against bombing by the Red Army is owed to his engagement. Weinert died shot together with his wife most probably on 23.I 1945 in their own house. His grave perished but Weinert remained in grateful memory of many inhabitants of Sieradz as an honest man.
