Summary/Abstract: This study was provoked by the conclusions made by Risto Peka Penanen in his article Lost in Sound Lines: Balkan Folklore Research and the Ottoman Heritage. In it the author declared that the researchers of Balkan folklore music have been concentrating mainly on the intervals, the musical structures and modes instead of looking at the key for the system maqam (Sufism) parameters and in this way they were prone to implement West European mode concepts for music which more or less functions on different principles. Along with the discussion connected with the misunderstandings in the interpretation of the term ‘tonic’ and finalis the present text comments also on the necessity of a discussion concerning the interpretation/use of other terms, borrowed from West European music theory that carry logical ambivalence of key processes in the modes’ formation in Bulgarian folklore song melody.
