Sedentarization of Nomad Communism. Socialist Urbanization and Circles of Citizenship

Summary/Abstract: Centered on Sofia of the 50s and 60s the paper raises the more general question about the specificity of communist urbanization seen in the perspective of the territorialization of the citizens’ rights, the emergence of urban consumption and cultural practices. Citizenship is a status, linked to privilege and ideology. The central thesis is that the hierarchical circles of citizenship inside the country were an instrument of domination, resembling the spatial disposition that the West would use to discipline immigrant flows from the Third world.
