Summary/Abstract: The research of different aspects of human capital originates in some centuries ago. Object of research in the present article is the essence of human capital and its formation through education according to Adam Smith's views. His ideas about the “useful abilities” of man; about the “real expenses” of their acquisition; about the education of “the whole mass of people”; about the role of the state in “encouraging” the national education; about the quality of education and etc. outlive their time and turn into pillars of the contemporary concept for the human capital.
