Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to identify the defining features of interpretation – oral translation – those which make it significantly different from any form of written translation. Such features result from the oral character of the message to be translated which is utterance, and make interpretation an eminently communicative instance of translation. In interpretation the extralinguistic dimension has prevalence over the linguistic one, meaning is looked for “beyond words”, in the area of the speaker’s communicative intent rather than in the verbal product as such. Therefore, interpretation teaching based on this approach should consider raising communicative awareness in interpreting trainees as a prerequisite for any interpreting training course.
