Summary/Abstract: This text makes a philosophical analysis of the notion of toleration in a correlation with the notion of recognition. In a first step, C. Taylor’s and Axel Honneth’s conceptions on recognition are critically discussed – in these different theories a common place is pointed, namely that recognition is taken as a constitutive element of subject self-realization. It is then demonstrated that if recognition is a constitutive element of self-realization and if self-realization is the final end of social interaction then we have to give equal or due recognition to any identity/difference claim. In this case the notion of recognition is enlarged too much – the notion looses its normative or distinguishing power. In contrast here another notion is elaborated – the notion of toleration, conceived as semi-recognition, as negative, or limited recognition. To tolerate somebody means to recognize him/her, but never according to his or her own measure. The toleration is a negative recognition that limits the possibilities of the other to universalize his or her own identity closing the identity claims in the private sphere. In this light toleration is a powerful procedure of distinguishing private from public spaces. In M. Walzer’s context I suggest to think „the regimes of toleration“ as regimes of distinguishing private from public.
