Summary/Abstract: National identity and its primary denomination are not given once and forever – they are an ideological construction, its reception becomes clearly defined at a certain point in the life of peoples, when they become aware of themselves as historical nations. In spite of their hesitation to pin themselves down to the designation of Ρωμιοί, the Greeks will finally accept the prestigious ethnonym of Hellenes, thus freeing it from the compromising pagan content. As to the Wallachians (Vlahs), Moldavians, and Transylvanians, they will need time before uniting the three historical provinces, and particularly before identifying themselves all as Romanians descended from the Romans of Emperor Trajan and the Dacians of King Decebalus. During the Enlightenment either of the peoples will try to identify themselves with the supposed heritage of their ancestors, 1821 becoming the culmination of self-confirmation for both nations.
