Fear of Examinations and Educational Factors of Its Overcoming

Summary/Abstract: This article, based on the carried out scientific researches’ data of late decades, tries to reveal the actuality of the phenomenon of exam fear and opportunities of solving this problem. In this article there is analyzed an actual exam fear phenomenon characteristic of different aged students from various countries and social classes. Exam fear is presented as a constituent part of the complicated phenomenon of school fear, emphasizing educational factors of its overcoming. Exam fear is also presented as a process and as a state. Exam fear’s expression is linked to the educational (the exam system, terms of testing, the pedagogical competence of teachers and learning to learn), psychological (temperament of learners, sex, age, cooperative skills, training of self-confidence, and acquisition of the personal autonomy), managerial factors (daily timetable, ways of spare time spending, planning of time, communicative skills, creation of working atmosphere) expression. Exam fear is presented in aspects of an individual, society, school and socium. In this article there are indicated recommendations to teachers, learners and their families, who try to avoid problems, which are raised by expression of exam fear. This article enquires into the scientific problem of exam fear, searching for an answer to a question: what educational, psychological and managerial dimensions influence learners if they experience the feeling of exam fear? The aim of this article – to research the expression of exam fear, its peculiarities and possible ways of solving this problem – is answered by data of research carried out in Lithuanian schools. Various scientific schools, searching for the most propitious ways of solving this problem, analyze exam fear, an actual factor to each learner. Exam fear is the multidiscipline and multicultural phenomenon. Exam fear is also expressed as an individual, organizational and social phenomenon. The softening and avoiding the phenomenon of exam fear is related to the education policy and search for an effective interaction of the school as an organization, a family and society.
