Summary/Abstract: Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan project, Edward Teller and the h Bomb, Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, Wilhelm Furtwägler and Gustav Gründgens – they are the “protagonists” of some cases of moral rectitude as regards the Nazi regime or compromise with it. Is it a moral weakness to abandon one’s convictions when they are used by others to evil purposes? Is it moral rectitude to stick to one’s convictions, serving an evil purpose? Does refusing compromise mean rigidity of thought? These are the main issues that the author tackles in his essay.
