Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is a conceptualization of learning as a phenomenon on the basis of lifespan developmental psychology. Its central idea about development which is not completed at adulthood but that it extends across the entire life course as an adaptive process of acquisition, maintenance, transformation, and attrition of psychological structures and functions is explained. The theory of selective optimization with compensation is examined as a very deep explanation of ontogenesis across the lifespan that afford an opportunity for extending the theme of capacity for adult learning. Development seen as an interaction between maturation, learning and aging puts learning, although implicitly, as a central category of analysis. The model of assimilative and accommodative coping throws an additional light on its nature. Empirical evidence on the dynamics of intellectual potential across the lifespan is suggested and some implications for adult education and learning are outlined on this basis. As a conclusion some ideas for extending the scope of the concept with non-cognitive components are proposed.
