Summary/Abstract: The article deals with conception of one of the constituents of a manifold intonation system, i.e. syntagmatic distribution as the means of sound non-verbal communication and its functional possibilities in the Lithuanian and Russian languages. Possibilities concerning expression of intonation in general and each of its constituents in particular, including syntagmatic distribution, depend on a language type and peculiarities of its structure. Contrastive research of languages ascribed to different structural types (Russian, Vietnamese, Arabian, Hindi, Spanish, and others) indicated that possibilities of syntagmatic distribution are better in analitical languages than in flective ones. However, even in the languages of the same type the function of syntagmatic distribution varies. It depends on lexical, grammatical and other possibilities of the means of expression in every single language. Our research indicated that syntagmatic distribution in both the Lithuanian and Russian languages is characterized by quite high functional possibilities. However, in Lithuanian the latter are worse compared to Russian. It is conditioned by better possibilities of flexions, whereas recently in the Russian language some features common to analitical languages can be found more often.
