Summary/Abstract: From a comparatist point of view the author critically examines Krleia's attitudes and assessments of the Croatian literary tradition, above all on nineteenth century romantic lyrical poetry. He reaches the conclusion that Krleža's thesis that Croatian poetry lagged behind European poetry about half a century was not substantiated and that it was based on the inappropriate parallelism with French literary trends. On the other hand the author points to evidence on parallelisms between Croatian poetic production and contemporary European tendencies. He repudiates Krleža's claim on the absence of continuity in Croatian poetic culture. He considers Krleža's statement on Šenoa's plagiarizing German poets capricious and ill-considered within his general denigration of Croatian lyrical poetry between the lllyrian Movement and the appaearance of Kranjčević. The author also draws attention to Krleža's emission of elementary facts, his ignorance of historical dates concerning Croatian writers of the 16th and 17th centuries (Marulić, Baraković) in his rhetorical and essayistic apostrophes. In the end he stresses that some of Krleža's evaluations are subject to revisions and corrections. The more so for having had an unfavourable impact on the critical reception and general attitude towards Croatian 19th century literature.
