Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present Peneolpe’s second dream that can be found in the Odyssey, book XIX. This dream has been analysed in detail by many researchers yet Polish literature seem to lack such analysis. Thus the present article provides description and detailed analysis of the first allegorical dream in ancient Greek literature. Different ways of interpretation Penelope’s dream are demonstrated and also the attempt of applying Freud’s inversion of affect is discussed in the article. Considerable attention is paid to the theme of the gates of horn and ivory which is very famous in literature and is frequently referred to by authors. The article is intended to show the character of this dream scene and its function for the plot development. It also attempts to answer the question whether the dream was significant for Odysseus and Penelope and whether it served to prepare their reunion.
