Summary/Abstract: The analysis presented in the article shows that in the case of “world” (unlike the case of “home”) the physical meaning is more important than the social one. Furthermore, the author presents survey results, which enable a reconstruction of the axiological dimension of the common image of “home”. The analysis of systemic data and texts of culture (literary plots) proves that “home” and “world” are opposing each other in many aspects (the oppositions: far – near, familiar – alien, central - peripheral). Simultaneously though, they maintain a complementary relation, which can be noticed in traditional folk culture.
