Summary/Abstract: We find relevant for this study to highlight the general evolutionist trend of the approach on the right to life in terms of values in general and in terms of legal values in particular, established by the general principles in the Romanian Constitution, republished, and the general principles set in the Preamble to the European and universal standards for human and citizen rights. Moreover, in this context, the consecration of the principle according to which “everyone’s right to life is a basic value in a democratic society and that the abolition of the death penalty is essential for the protection of this right and for the full recognition of the inherent dignity of all human beings;” in the Preamble of Protocol 13 to the Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms concerning the abolition of the death penalty in all circumstances was one of the reasons for choosing this subject for the present study. Following a key – scheme we will try to analyze successively the concept of right to life, identifying the general principles by which the documents referred proclaim the right to life as a supreme value, as fundamental value, component of human dignity addressed as universal value, guaranteeing the right to life in the Romanian Constitution and in Constitutions of European Union member states, guaranteeing the right to life in the universal human rights standards at the UN level and guaranteeing the right to life in European regional standards on human rights.
