Summary/Abstract: Having considered a number of cases the author comes to the conclusion that writers/critics use examples from visual arts in order to supply persuasive illustrations of their own claims, to establish the border lines between various media and, finally, to draw attention to painters that have been more successful than the writers of the same period.
