Summary/Abstract: Social interaction typically takes place in the context of hierarchically nested social groups. Hence the interest in tracing contextual effects in empirically found relationships. Such attempts stepped on solid methodological ground with the borrowing of mixed models techniques and the advent of hierarchical models. In social survey research, non-linear mixed and hierarchical models are particularly promising. They may be used as models of measurement, in small area estimation, and many other research situations. The article gives some examples based on Bulgarian empirical data.
