The Problem of the Origin of Geometry and the Problem of History in "The Origin of Geometry" by E. Husserl

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses E. Husserl's text The origin of Geometry. The two main problems of the article are the question of the origin of geometry, as intentional-historical question and the question of the essence of history as derived from the former one. The first part of the article investigates the distinction between 'Ursprung' and "Anfang" of the geometry as a distinction between its ideal, transcendental history and its empirical history. It is shown how language, temporality and the possibility of theorizing make such a distinction possible. The conclusion is drawn that for Husserl geometry is to be considered as a specific sense formation (Sinn-bildung), what explains the very possibility of asking the question of the origin of geometry in the way he asks it. The second part of the article concentrates on the problems of the essence of history/historicity and tradition, based on the example of geometry. The main thesis is that for Husserl history can be understood as a correlation between the inner subjective historicity (Geschichtlichkeit) of the intending ego-subjects and the historicity of the ideal meanings they constitute. Thus history itself is presemted as a sense formation, as the constant flux of sense formations and sense sedimentations. This way is explained the notion of tradition as well. The main conclusion of the article is that history thus conceived is a teleological history of reason, a self-revelation of reason questioning its own historical syntheses.
