Analysis of the Communication Process between Staff and Intellectually Disabled Residents of Social Welfare Home

Summary/Abstract: The article aims at presenting the process of communication between personnel and intellectually disabled residents of a social welfare home. It focuses on a symbolic act of communication, where the key role is played by various forms of expression of the mentally disabled wards. The author’s reflections are placed in the context of general characteristics of intellectually disabled individuals communicating with their surroundings, referring to such interaction mechanisms as intentionality and significance, as well as situationality and standardization of a message. The studies make use of qualitative data collected using the techniques of unstructured interview and participant observation, conducted with personnel and mentally disabled residents of a social welfare home. Analysis and interpretation of research material is conducted in accordance with methodological principles of grounded theory.
