Summary/Abstract: Socio-economic transformation in Poland as well as the accession to the European Union caused qualitative and quantitative changes in international migration processes. A symptom of the changes was a growing importance of temporary migration. Nowadays Poland is one of the main sending countries in Europe. According to the Central Statistical Office in Poland (GUS) for the end of 2010 there were 1.990 thousand Polish citizens living abroad, of which 1.690 thousand in Europe (temporary migration). The main aim of this paper is to present the scale and structure of emigration from Poland and to present the most important social consequences of the outflow. The study provides a review of negative results of migration for households and families, including the exclusion from different spheres of social life, disintegration of families, divorces and the phenomenon of being orphaned.
