Summary/Abstract: The paper considers Chapter II of Max Weber’s unfinished work Economy and Society, ‘Sociological Categories of Economic Action’, deciphering it as a significant element of the analytical network of Weber’s “social economics”. This is an attempt to reconstruct the in-depth logic of the latter through Weber’s sociological reinterpretation of key categories of the marginal utility theory. The opposition “substantive-formal rationality” is discussed in the context of the so-called “uncertainty principle” in modern economic life, which is seen as relativizing the seemingly polar character of the opposition.
