Summary/Abstract: It’s not difficult to find some words in preserved ancient Greek literature which we are able to define as banned nowadays. We have a quite large stock of Greek “bad words” and we are able to distinguish them from a Greek language of culture. However, the problem is which of these words have been the abrupt ones and which have belonged to harmless curses or even euphemisms. The above mentioned problems are connected with an issue of coarse words translation which can be literal or not. Not literal translation is therefore devoid of important aspects of Greek customs and traditions. This paper, using a few passages from Aristophanic comedy, shows how coarse words omission (both philology and translation) obscures the ancient realities and the record of original text.
