Summary/Abstract: Proper names play an important role in Maria Konopnicka’s tale O krasnoludkach i sierotce Marysi [Little Orphan Mary and the Gnomes]. They are among language tools used by the author to convey the key content of this work. My paper presents tale names translated into: Belarusian, Russian, and German. I analyze the semantic content of the names in connection with the nomina propria function of the original and I compare the translation of proper names into the above-mentioned languages. My translation analysis also describes certain difficulties of translation work and highlights successful proper names, some of which are even better understandable for the reader than their original versions. In addition, I compare the translators’ consistency in using different translation methods in relation to nomina propria. The paper shows that the author managed to direct the attention of young readers from different nations to things that are valuable, fair and exemplary. Meanwhile, the analysis of names used in translated versions of the tale enables one to assess how much of what the author intended was retained and how much of it was lost.
