Summary/Abstract: The object of the study - Death and its place in Castaneda's system of beliefs and world vision - is analysed by circumscribing the larger social context (the sixties), which, the author thinks, determines the structure of such a system. Death has two dimensions in Castaneda's work: at one level, it implies the idea of ordinary man being devoured, consumed by the Eagle; and at a second level, the idea of preserving one's consciousness beyond death, as in the sorcerer's case. The sorcerer does not disolve but develops a form of unity and combustion which allows him to enter a priviledged space.
