Summary/Abstract: The history of medicine is a science which studies the development of the medical knowledge and practice as specific constituent section of the human activity. The general questions of this development (history, notions, theories, and hypotheses) as well as the specific historical constructions of the particular medical disciplines and the numerous medical institutions in Bulgaria have been a subject of research by historians, medical historians and a number of other medical and non-medical specialists for more than 110 years. The application of systemic-institutional approach to the history of science and historical medical studies in particular require the history of ideas to be considered in close integration with the history of institutions. Even the most general overview of the history of medicine suggests the following three institutional components forming the system: 1) Historical medical literature; 2) The university teaching of the subject; 3) Historical medical community.
