Summary/Abstract: The present study, designed to investigate components of attention in children, addressed the development of the Stroop effect within the age span from 8 to 12 years. 192 school-aged children, coming from 4 age groups were individually administered by the first Bulgarian adaptation (M. Raycheva, 1999) of the Golden version of the test (1978), together with the coding sub-test of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for children and a reading test, corresponding to their grade level. The results show that age groups differ significantly in their performance on each of the three parts of the test, the interference score shows a significant age difference as well that is most pronounced between ages 8 and 9. The present results do not support the existence of significant sex differences, as they were found only in some of the age groups for specific parts of the test. The analysis of performance for each age group indicated score on the word page to be less than score on the color page in ages 8 and 9 and almost the same for 10-year-olds. The pattern of the scores for the oldest group is different and more like that of adults. The colour words selected for the Bulgarian adaptation and the necessity of a new version are discussed.
