Creating the Vision of the Dispute about Smolensk Cross in the Press – A Comparative Analysis

Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the creation of distinct perceptions of the world in the press. The analyzed articles on the dispute over the Smolensk cross have been published in the following newspapers: “Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Gazeta Polska”. The main purpose of the mentioned work is to prove that the same event might be described in various ways depending on a given perspective. The author describes strategies which are used by editors in order to present events related to Smolensk Cross by their own view. The mentioned strategies regard: citing, direct inducement and evaluation. The last strategy is divided into other plans of action: building a dichotomous vision of the world, trivializing, assigning unique and inferior positions. The description of the difference between the visions of the world leads to the recognition of the mechanism used in the press manipulation.
