Logistics strategies of global maritime container operators under the turbulent conditions on commodity and freight markets

Summary/Abstract: Transport activity carried out in global shipping sector and especially in container one is being constantly influenced by great deal of turbulent situations. The author has presented the main types and forms of crisis occurrences in maritime transport as well as the basic reasons of their coming into being. Special attention has been paid to the business and structural cycles as well as seasonal and hard predictable changes taking place in supply markets, especially connected with the sharp rise in bunker prices. Their character as well as strength and their impact on the effectiveness of the short and long term container shipping activity performed by shipowners have been determined. Essential strategies used by maritime container operators under turbulent conditions have been presented and analyzed. They have been viewed and assessed from the shippers and shipowners point of view. Implications resulting from their implementation in international maritime sector and indirectly in the global trade have been examined as well.
