Summary/Abstract: The present paper aims to illustrate and analyze the key events that occurred in the area of Western Balkans in 2009. Assuming that this space is one with a European vocation, we have subjected the internal realities and the behaviour on the international scene of these states to a brief analysis, which has the goal to asses the progress to their aspiration to integrate in the Euro-Atlantic space. We believe that the accession and integration of these states is the link between most of the events that occurred in this area, last year, infl uencing both domestic and foreign policies. This aspiration of Western Balkan states reveals the vulnerabilities, risks and threats that they must face with, but also the progresses they have made in strengthening democratic institutions.
