Summary/Abstract: This psychological study concerns the human capacity for „mind reading” or „the theory of mind”, conceived of as intentionality attributed to others’ consciousness and the understanding that other people are capable of conceiving of a given situation in a different way, or they can be led to conceive of it from different perspectives. The author traces the origins of this quasi-universal human “talent” in our childhood, and reviews the relevant research conducted on children (Jean Piaget, Heinz Wimmer and Josef Perner etc.). He concludes with an appraisal of the importance of this characteristically human talent within our interpersonal relationships and social life.
