Summary/Abstract: The article refers to the past of Ukraine, showing the course of social, political, legal and economic relations to be observed there between the 17th and 18th century in the so-called hetmanate period. The efforts to build one’s own state led to the necessity of law codification. And it was the way the collection of laws from 1743 under the name of “Prawa za kotorymi suditsja narod małorosijski” was created. “Prawa, którymi rządzi się naród małorosyjski”, is an original historical memento of the Ukrainians’ legal thought. The very collection reinforced the system of political forces at that time, „predicted” the approval of the feudal system which, practically speaking, already functioned. The very code regulated a wide spectrum of social relations, enforced legal sanctions for crimes and offences commited, as well as provided the order of the actions of court bodies. The code from 1743 reflects a difficult time of the so-called hetmanate. It was an attempt of a political-national self-realisation that is why it was destroyed by centralism. However, the code itself and the process of its creation prove a high level of the Ukraininan legal culture, whereas getting to know the code could be interesting in view of the historical past of Ukraine and its experience in building state and law.
